Images: Mirror Mirror & The Artist (Courtesy of Alliance Films); Gone Little Mosque on the Prairie (Courtesy of eOne Films)

• Father's Day this amazing and button pushing film from Astron-6 and Troma is out on a 4 Disc Set (BluRay, 2xDVD and CD) and it's guaranteed to freak you out. I saw it at the Toronto After Dark Film Festival in 2011 and I named it the best cult film of the festival with the icky-ist imagery and it certainly had one of the best Q&A's (see here). It's not for the faint of heart but for true cult fans. See my original vlog review of Father's Day here.
• Mirror Mirror Tarsem Singh's turn on the Snow White tale with Lily Collins as Snow White and Julia Roberts as the evil queen. Beautifully styled and very fantasy oriented, this one is a film I really wanted to check out.
• The Artist Winner of 5 Oscars this year The Artist won the hearts of many with it's old school silent film charm. Stars Jean Dujardin, Berenice Bejo and John Goodman.
• 21 Jump Street reboot of the 80's TV show about cops going over in high school, this revisioning with Channing Tatum and Jonah Hill looks like it takes the comedy and runs with it and is certainly on my to see list.
• Gone I was quite impressed with this thriller starring Amanda Seyfried as a survivor who is not taken that seriously, it's very interesting to see the different take and response her character gets from people and should be on any to see list for folks interested in gender dynamics.
• Wrath of the Titans Sequel to the 2010 Clash of the Titans reboot which yet again stars Sam Worthington as the hero Perseus. Also out this week is a Titans 2-Pack with both Wrath of the Titans and Clash of the Titans on BluRay (Amazon.ca only).
• Oranges & Sunshine stars Emily Watson as a social worker that takes on the task of reunited estranged families not only with the children separated from their families but also lead to believe they parents are no longer alive. Based on a true story, this one even the trailer can bring me to tears.
• Once Upon a Time in Anatolia co-winner for the 2011 Cannes Grand Prix this Turkish film has take the festival circuit by storm as well as having quite an impressive limited release run.
• TV on DVD this week including the Canadian drama Little Mosque on the Prairie: Season 5 Trailblazing (Amazon.ca only) and Damages The Complete Fourth Season which stars Glenn Close, Rose Byrne, John Goodman and Dylan Baker.
• Christopher Nolan Director's Collection (BluRay) impressive collection of Nolan's work including Memento, Insomnia, Inception, Batman Begins & The Dark Knight; and just in time for folks looking to rev up their Nolan watching pre-The Dark Knight Rises this July.
• A Thousand Words comedy starring Eddie Murphy as a man who literally is on a countdown to only saying a maximum of 1,000 more words.
• Plus: Book to Film Club November reading selection Safe Haven by Nicholas Sparks is being released in paperback. See more about the 2012 Movie Moxie Book Club here and sign up for updates here.

DVD Releases June 19, 2012

Time to take a look at a selection of DVD releases for Tuesday June 19, 2012!

• Keyhole Historical-feel gangster film in the traditional wild atmospheric vibe of director Guy Maddin. Not my favourite Maddin, but did definitely enjoy the atmo and most of the bizarreness. Keyhole stars Jason Patric, Isabella Rossellini and Udo Kier,

• Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows (podcast review) Robert Downey Jr. and Jule Law are back in the sequel to the successful Sherlock Holmes film, this time with new cast members Noomi Rapace but still with Guy Ritchie in the directors chair. Not quite as amazing as the first film but still a lot of fun.
• Ghost Rider: Spirit of Vengeance (podcast review) more sequels this week with Nicolas Cage back as the Devil-dealed Johnny Blaze aka Ghost Rider, I hmm'd and haw'd on this one, but it's certainly better than the original and has an impressive supporting casting including Idris Elba, Ciarán Hinds and Anthony Stewart Head; Ghost Rider: Spirit of Vengeance comes out on Blu-ray, 3D Blu-ray & DVD

• The Dark Crystal / Labyrinth on Blu-ray This set looks pretty good to, it's a 2-Disc Collectors Edition called the The Brian Froud Art Edition.
• Meatballs Ivan Reitman's classic Canadian camp comedy starring Bill Murray and Harvey Atkin comes out on BluRay and DVD.
• Humans vs Zombies BluRay Wildcard pick of the week is this "Dark Comedy and Horror unite in this satirical thriller based on the "Live Action Role-Playing" game of the same name." Based on LARPing and zombies... I want to see it!

Images: The Collapsed & Ultimate Fighter 14 (Bisping vs Miller) Courtesy of Anchor Bay Entertainment; John Carter © 2012 Disney. All Rights Reserved.

• The Collapsed (DVD Review) Really great post apocalyptic thriller, I love films like this that are high concept story wise and are lower budget but make the most of it, plus it let sthe audience bring their own ideas to the story in terms of trying to figure it out. I quite enjoyed and recommend this one.
• The Ultimate Fighter 14 (Team Bisping and Team Miller) DVD Review Wow, this 5-Disc DVD is just jammed packed with awesomeness of Season 14 of The Ultimate Fighter which focuses on Bantamweight and Featherweight fighters for the first time. Great fights, great fighters with a ton of talent and spirit make for a very interesting season and explosive action. I also loved that the series includes the two coaches Michael Bisping and Jason Miller taking each other on at the finale.

• John Carter (DVD/BluRay Combo Review) Fabulous adventure film blending fantasy, science fiction and even some sword & sandals action, this one is rich with actual history and a whole world of new history with fabulous characters and very beautiful art direction. Loved it. Available on DVD, DVD/Blu-Ray Combo and 3D DVD/Blu-Ray/Digital Combo.

• Act of Valor is a film I can't quite tell how I feel about, it is going for a real-feel being based on real events, but still narrative film about SEALs, CIA and terrorists.
• Safe House action/thriller with international flavour starring Ryan Reynolds and Denzel Washington.
• The Three Stooges Ultimate Collection This is quite an epic collection with all 190 Short Films, 11 Hours of Movies (including features Have Rocket, Will Travel & Rockin' In The Rockies), shorts and never-before-released material for a grand total of 635 minutes.

Images: Aggression Scale (Courtesy of Anchor Bay Entertainment), Goon (Courtesy of Alliance Films), True Blood Season 4 (©2012 Warner Bros. Entertainment Inc. All rights reserved.); and We Need to Talk About Kevin & Rookie Blue (Courtesy of eOne Films)

• Aggression Scale (DVD review) Psychological thriller exploring the idea of aggressive behaviour of as it relates to injuring others. This one had a really interesting story and perspective and definitive boundary-pushing in a unique way.
• We Need to Talk About Kevin drama starring Tilda Swinton, John C. Reilly, Ezra Miller about a family dealing with a son who is seems to become more and more vicious as he grows up. I've heard such excellent things about this one and I really wanted to see it.
• Goon Canadian hockey comedy starring Seann William Scott as a hockey player taken on to provide fights as entertainment in the games, this looks pretty funny to me and it's just so Canadian I can't help but see it. It also stars Alison Pill, Liev Schreiber and Jay Baruchel.
• UFC 144: Edgar vs Henderson in Japan! I'm still in the very early stages of understanding all the UFC goodness, but this DVD looks jam packed with additional fights of Quinton “Rampage” Jackson vs Ryan Bader and Yoshihiro Akiyama in his welterweight debut vs Jake Shields; and of course plus main event of Frankie “The Answer” Edgar vs Benson “Smooth” Henderson.
• Fightville (podcast review) MMA documentary following promoters, trainers and fighters (including the formidable Dustin 'The Diamond' Poirier) in Southern Louisiana as they but their blood, sweat and tears into the sport (Available on Amazon.com as of July 10, 2012).
• True Blood: The Complete Fourth Season What antics will this risque vampires in plain sight get up to in it's fourth season? I'm not sure as I haven't even seen it it! Although I do mention in the vlog that I podcasting through season 3 of True Blood over at Hexed: Sisterhood of the Supernatural & you can check out those discussions here.
• More TV to enjoy including the Canadian choices of cop drama Rookie Blue Season 2 and historical mystery show Murdoch Mysteries Season 4.
• Apnea This Greek film is definitely my wild card pick of the week, with a tagline of "The deeper you dive, the deeper you breath." and it's made the festival circuit and has a thriller feel centred on a swimmer, I'm completely curious. See more are the films IMDb Page.
• Abraham Lincoln vs Zombies Not to be confused with the upcoming film Abraham Lincolm Vampire Hunter! This one is direct to DVD and stars David Alexander, Raed Ali and Bernie Ask and is directed by Richard Schenkman and looks pretty similar to the idea of Vampire Hunter.
• Jules Verne's Mysterious Island this one recently aired on SyFy and stars Gina Holden (Harper's Island), Lochlyn Munro and Pruitt Taylor Vince and is based on, you guessed it Jules Verne's novel The Mysterious Island from 1874.

DVD and BluRay releases for Tuesday May 22, 2012:

• The Secret World of Arrietty (DVD/Blu-Ray Review) Awesome animated film based on The Borrowers by Mary Norton which was our January 2012 Reading Selection and February 2012 Film Selection. Fabulous film with adventurous female protagonist in a family of tiny people set in the world of humans beings being huge.
• The Woman in Black Another Movie Moxie Book to Film Club and this one we actually back in October 2011 Reading selection and was released in February 2012, it's a supernatural drama starring Daniel Radcliffe as a young lawyer to settle the affairs of a woman who has passed (see review in vlog above).
• Teen Wolf: Season 1 I've really enjoyed this summer TV series starring Tyler Posey, Dylan O'Brien, Colton Haynes and Crystal Reed that used the premise of the 80's Michael J. Fox film of a teenage werewolf but updates it to current day and keeps the teen angst, comedy and uses the supernatural elements very well. I chat about it over at Hexed: Sisterhood of the Supernatural, with my sister Suzie; see those chats here and an episode-by-episode rundown of season 1 here.
• The River Complete Season First Season from the folks that brought us the creepy Paranormal Activity we get this creepy drama with a strong POV and found footage feel as a family looks for their lost-in-the-wilderness wilderness documentary father.
• American Warships not to be confused with the just released Battleship, this is a mockbuster (or as I often mispronounce as a 'mock-u-bluster', this one actually aired on Space over the weekend and was previously titled American Battleship.
• Sherlock Season 2 I know many people are huge fans of this UK series starring Benedict Cumberbatch as the sleuth to be reckoned with. I still need to check it out.
• Flashpoint: The Complete Third Season This is really odd flip here as it's a new to DVD in Canada (and a Canadian series) but this season already came out in the US last year! Bizarre! Stars Enrico Colantoni, Hugh Dillon and Amy Jo Johnson.
• Rizzoli & Isles: The Complete Second Season More TV Goodness (wow, summer season must be right around the corner!) as with this femme doctor/detective duo procedural series starring Angie Harmon and Sasha Alexander.
• The Grey Survivalist action thriller starring Liam Neeson and Frank Grillo
• This Means War The battle to win Reese Witherspoon lies in the tactics between Chris Pine & Tom Hardy. I don't like the premise, but dang I like the cast.
• Red Tails historically set during WWII and follows African American pilots who have yet to be given the chance to show what they can really do.
• Haunted Anthology Amazing anthology with many awesome supernatural horror films: Insidious, The Blair Witch Project, The Last Exorcism, The Others and 1408 (Canada only).

DVD Releases for May 15, 2012

Time to take a look at a selection of DVD releases for Tuesday May 15, 2012!

Images: Hard Core Logo 2 (Courtesy of Alliance Films); Albert Nobbs, One For the Money, Rampart & WrestleMania XXVIII (Courtesy of eOne Films)

• The Devil Inside I had to do a double take and get my research-mode hat on to see if this was the possession/exorcism film that came out earlier this year because the DVD cover looks *nothing* like the poster or any scene in the film, but alas, it is that film starring Fernanda Andrade. Wow.
• Hard Core Logo 2 Bruce McDonald's sequel to Hard Core Logo gets a little meta with him getting in front of the camera as he investigates a woman who says she is channelling Joe Dick from the first films. I can't wait to see it. (Amazon.ca only)
• Dragonslayer documentary following skakeboarder Josh 'Skreech' Sandova, with a strong vérité style quality that follows all aspects of his life on and off a skateboarding and showcases how it's very much interlinked in every aspect of his like.
• Chronicle Science fiction film that centres on teenage 'regular' guys who get superpowers, there is a bit of a divide on how this was received and I haven't seen it yet but I think I have a feeling I might have been unimpressed. But, I am still curious to see it.
• Norwegian Wood drama/romance based on the book by Haruki Murakami and if I had known we'd get this one I so would have made it a book club title1 It starst Ken'ichi Matsuyama and Rinko Kikuchi and is directed by Anh Hung Tran.
• Albert Nobbs I really want to see this one set in 19th century island and follows a woman who poses as a man to work as a butler in a time where women just didn't do such things. Fabulous cast includes Glenn Close, Mia Wasikowska, Janet McTeer and Aaron Johnson
• One for the Money More book adaptation today! This one is based on the novels by Janet Evanovich and stars Katherine Heigl as a woman who newly divorced and out of a job starts working in the bail-bond trade. I actually think it looks quite interesting.
• Rampart stars Woody Harrelson as a renegade cop in the late 90's in LA. Also stars Ben Foster and Sigourney Weaver.
• The Front Line Historically-set South Korean war film about the battle to determine the border between the North and South.
• Michael Several films with this title so for clarity this is a film by Markus Scheinzer; starring Michael Fuith, David Rauchenberger and Christine Kain and a big festival heavy hitter.
• Miss Bala Mexican thriller about an aspiring beauty in a culture of crime. I'm not sure I've heard a beauty-queen film that's a thriller before, but that makes me more curious about it!
• Woman Knight of Mirror Lake (BluRay) Sometimes I love writing about DVD release just for stumbling on films like this, it's from the director of IP Man and just looks crazy from the cover, although very little information is available on it, it's noted to start Kevin Cheng and Pat Ha and I wonder who the lady with the big gun on the cover is!
• Descendents Careful here, it's not THE Descendants, but Descendents and looks like a zombie film. It stars Cristobal Barra and Patricio Lynch.
• Buffy the Vampire Slayer Season 8 Motion Comic (BluRay/DVD Combo) Motion comic for post-tv-series season. I'm not into motion comics but for Buffy, I might tread in to this world.
• WrestleMania XXVIII WWE goes to Miami, Florida for WrestlMania and matches include John Cena vs. The Rock, plus Undertaker defending his 20-0 winning streak with the WWE. I'm still processing that it's the 28th WrestleMania. 28th!
