Hello Film Fans and Fanatics!
Welcome to Film Fan Fridays for Friday June 29, 2012! Leading into this holiday weekend we have a whopping 8 films to choose from, plus the summer classic of Jaws playing at Lightbox and continuing the summer superhero rush with The Amazing Spider-Man out early next week.
In limited release this week we start with 2 documentaries to enjoy including Flamenco, Flamenco from director Carlos Saura who also brought us the dance film Fados and our second documentary is Town of Runners centred on a group of runners from Ethiopia. Our third limited release of the week is Dark Horse from director Todd Solondz (Life During Wartime) following love of late bloomers. Plus, if you are a fan of shark films and loved to be scared check out Jaws playing at Lightbox all week.
In wide release this week we have five films chose from and what better way to start Canada Day weekend thank with a Canadian film? The Canadian film of the week is most definitely Sarah Polley's Take This Waltz starring Michelle Williams, Seth Rogen and Luke Kirby, and I think it looks very interesting. We also have Magic Mike from Steven Soderbergh starring Channing Tatum as a stripper, drama People Like Us starring Chris Pine and Elizabeth Banks, comedy Ted starring Mark Whalberg and a teddy bear (who else is confused???) and Tyler Perry's latest with Madea's Witness Protection.
And after your weekend fun has come to a close, next week we have the mid-week release of The Amazing Spider-Man (in 3D) on Tuesday July 3, 2012. Superhero film bookending the North American holiday weekends. That's going to be a big pick for folks this week I'm sure.

Film Fan Fridays for Friday June 22, 2012
Hello Film Fans and Fanatics!
Welcome to Film Fan Fridays for Friday June 22, 2012! It' been a heck of a hot week and I'm hoping to share this newsletter without my computer fizzling and sizzling!
In limited release this week we have a whole bunch of films to choose from and I know one that is on my radar is Your Sister's Sister from writer/director Lynn Shelton (Humpday, My Effortless Brilliance) with a fabulous cast including Mark Duplass, Emily Blunt and Rosemarie DeWitt. I think this week you could travel around the world in our limited release with documentary 5 Broken Cameras set in Palestine, Alps from Greece, El Jefe / The Boss a Canada/Columbia/Argentina co-production, Patang / The Kite from India and the South Korean romantic comedy All About My Wife / Nae Anaeui Modeun Geot. And you can bring it all home with the Canadian release of Bruno's Blues mockumentary/comedy that opens on on Saturday June 23, 2012 at The Carlton.
In wide release this week we have more than one of my most anticipated films of the year coming out with both female protagonist Pixar film Brave and the 2012 Movie Moxie Book to Film Club Selection Abraham Lincoln Vampire Hunter from director Timur Bekmambetov (Night Watch / Nochnoi Dozor, Day Watch / Dnevnoy Dozor) that's a genre masher bringing history and vampires together. Wow. I never thought the day would come where both films I was really looking forward to of the week would be in 3D. Yikes! How times change. Also out in wide release the apocalypse/armageddon friend-comedy Seeking a Friend for the End of the World starring Steve Carrell and Keira Knightly and the Bollywood film Teri Meri Kahaani.

Film Fan Fridays for Friday June 15, 2012
Hello Film Fans and Fanatics!
Welcome to Film Fan Fridays for Friday June 15, 2012!
In limited release this week we have have a whopping three Canadian releases with the voyeur crime thriller 388 Arletta Avenue, indie awesomeness of i am a good person i am a bad person which has beautiful naturalism and quiet emotional intensity. Our third Canadian release is the road film Foreverland which just the trailer of the film got me teary. One film that certainly has my eye this week is Safety Not Guaranteed that's based on the idea of a journalist going undercover to respond to an ad for a time-travel companion, and I think we officially have enough films in the past few years to call scifi-drama a legit subgenre. Going for more straight drama we have The Woman in the Fifth / La femme du Vème with Ethan Hawke and Kristen Scott Thomas and in the land of comedy we have Lola Versus with Greta Gerwig. If documentaries are your thing you have three to choose from including Marina Abramovic: The Artist is Present centred on the Serbian performances artist, The Island President and Kivalina vs Exxon and for the Friday, June 15, 9:15 PM screening producer David Miller will be in attendance for a post-screening Q & A.
In wide release this week we have it's a bit more quiet with just three film including the Adam Sandler comedy That's My Boy, retro nostalgia look at hair metal with Rock of Ages starring Tom Cruise and the cricket-centric Bollywood film Ferrari Ki Sawaari.

Film Fan Fridays for Friday June 8, 2012
Hello Film Fans and Fanatics!
Welcome to Film Fan Fridays for Friday June 8, 2012!
In limited release this week we have 4 films to choose from starting with a 1983-set Canadian science fiction film Beyond the Black Rainbow which I am really curious about. We also have the stoner comedy High School which I saw a few years back at the Toronto After Dark Film Festival 2010 and I thought it was hilarious! Also out in limited release is the Indian political thriller Shanghai and Double Trouble a Beijing-set comedy starring Jaycee Chan and I could find a trailer for it I could not find any more information on the film!
In wide release this week we have Cosmopolis hot out of Cannes and was also our May Reading Selection for the Book to Film Club and the adaptation stars Robert Pattinson and is directed by David Cronenberg. Another exciting release of the week is Ridley Scott's Alien prequel Prometheus which I have been doing my very best to avoid spoilers for and in such recently revisited all four Alien films to keep my busy (see reviews here!) and am really looking forward to seeing the new one on the big screen. Last up for wide release is Madagascar 3: Europe's Most Wanted and although I've not seen any of the previous films the trailer for this one gets me, especially the zebra in an afro dancing at the circus. How could that not be fun?

Film Fan Fridays for Friday June 1, 2012
Hello Film Fans and Fanatics!
Welcome to Film Fan Fridays for Friday June 1, 2012!
In limited release this week we have tons of films to choose from including quite as selection of dramas that look very touching. Starting off that trends is the Korean film As One that is based the true events of the North and South Koreans coming together to play together on a table tennis team in 1991, another based on a true story film is the French film The Intouchables about an unlikely duo of a paraplegic and his carer, plus the formidable looking drama In the Family that's been getting absolutely astonishing reviews. What a week! And we aren't even a third of the way through the releases yet! We also have a new film from Wes Anderson (The Royal Tenanbaums) with Moonrise Kingdom which looks like it continues his quirky tradition, A Beginner's Guide to Endings which was at TIFF in 2010, Crooked Arrows which follows a Native American lacrosse team with a new coach, and comedy We Have a Pope / Habemus Papam about a newly appointed but not expected new pope. Last but not least for limited releases is the horror film Lovely Molly, which I am definitely hoping to see.
In wide release this week we have three releases to choose from and I know I'm going with Snow White and the Huntsman starring Kristen Stewart (Twilight) as Snow White, Charlize Theron as the Evil Queen and Chris Hemsworth (Thor) as the Hunstman. This film looks so amazing, the art direction, the warrior snow white, the aliveness and imagination made me giddy! On the flip side of the coin we have Piranha 3DD (in 3D) and finally the Bollywood action flick Rowdy Rathore.

Hello Film Fans and Fanatics!
Welcome to Film Fan Fridays for Friday May 25, 2012!
In limited release this week we have and interesting variety of films to choose from, I've got my eye on documentary Indie Game: The Movie that follows video game developers and just played during the Hot Docs. More documentary goodness witn Last Call at the Oasis looking and the diminishing supply of water. We also have the Canadian film Barrymore, a film adaptation of the play starring Christopher Plummer as John Barrymore in preparation of 1920 Broadway production of Richard III. Keeping it historical we have Hysteria, a romantic comedy set during the invention of the vibrator. More comedy this week with the Lebanese film Where Do We Go Now? and smart kid looking for his father in Jesus Henry Christ.
In wide release this week we have just two films to choose from including the extreme tourism horror flick Chernobyl Diaries (I'm so seeing that...) and science fiction comedy three-quel Men in Black 3 (in 3D, naturally).

Hello Film Fans and Fanatics!
Welcome to Film Fan Fridays for Friday May 18, 2012! What do we have in store this week? Looks like a sweet combination of films from near and far, crossing many genres and providing lots of options for the Victoria Day weekend.

In limited release this week we have the fascinating Canadian speculative fiction/thriller The Corridor opening at The Projection Booth, I had a chance to catch it an Toronto After Dark last year and quite enjoyed it, and have selection of The Corridor introduction and Q&A with director Evan Kelly, writer Josh MacDonald and lead actor Stephen Chambers videos here, although note the spoiler warnings to know what to watch *after* seeing it; it's better to watch going in blind. Also out in limited release at Hot Docs Bloor Cinema is the documentary Marley about the life & music of Bob Marley. Plus we have the Norwegian coming of age Turn Me On, Dammit! / Få meg på, for faen, Jack Black and Shirley MacLaine comedy Bernie and drama Virginia starring Jennifer Connelly.
In wide release this week we have one of the most jabbed at films of the year, Battleship, for the fact that it's based on a video game but I'm truly hoping it's going to be all kinds of crazy fun. If you are looking for comedy we have the pregnancy comedy What to Expect When You're Expecting in release what's got quite an impressive case, but if action/thrillers are more your style then check out the The Samaritan with Samuel L. Jackson (It's Canadian! to boot!) as well as the Bollywood action flick Department.

Film Fan Fridays for Friday May 11, 2012
Hello Film Fans and Fanatics!

Welcome to Film Fan Fridays for Friday May 11, 2012! It's our second week in a row of one whopping wide release and lots of awesome limited releases. What could they be? Let's have a look.
In limited release this week we have tons of films to choose from including a fair amount of Docs including A Place Called Los Pereyra plus right hot of the heels of Hot Docs we have both Big Boys Gone Bananas and the China Heavyweight which I'm really looking forward to. We also have the Canadian biopic Edwin Boyd: Citizen Gangster starring Scott Speedman and Kevin Durand, the South Korean mystery Helpless / Hoa-cha and cult-centred Sound of My Voice, and all of these are easily on my to see list. Also in limited release is A Bottle in the Gaza Sea / Une bouteille à la mer based on the novel by Valérie Zenatti, and stars Hiam Abbass and Salim Dau.
In wide release this week we have just one release for this weekend with the Tim Burton film Dark Shadows which is based on the 60-70's supernatural gothic soap opera of the same name and stars Johnny Depp, Michelle Pfeiffer, Helena Bonham Carter and Eva Green.
That's it for this weeks release, but a few more films to keep in mind that crop up before next Friday include the mid-week release of The Dictator starring Sacha Baron Cohen which comes out on Wednesday May 16, 2012. And for the Toronto folk who love films that keep you on the very edge of your seat I highly recommend checking out The Loved Ones screening as a Rue Morgue Cinemacabre Night on Thursday May 17, 2012 at 9:30PM the Toronto Underground; it's an amazing Australian horror flick that is very twisted and absolutely outstanding. I'm thrilled to see it screen again in the city.

Film Fan Fridays for Friday May 4, 2012
Hello Film Fans and Fanatics!

Welcome to Film Fan Fridays for Friday May 4, 2012! I feel like I should do fake-subliminal messaging here and just have 'The Avengers' every few words because the set-of-superheroes film seems to be taking over the airways, TV waves, audio waves and everything waves! It doesn't even have any other films in wide release as competition.
But, we are getting other films to choose from. In limited release this week we have the thriller Headhunters / Hodejegerne which looks pretty awesome, it's a Norwegian/German co-production and is based on the book by Jo Nesbø. We also have Detachment starring Adrien Brody as a substitute teacher who is rather, detached (not literally - it's a drama, not horror), plus The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel a UK comedy centred on an resort in India that caters to retirees. And rounding out the limited releases we have the documentary Planet Yoga and Bollywood romance Jannat 2.
In wide release this week we have to sole release of The Avengers, starring a whack-ton of superhero characters and stellar cast of Robert Downey Jr. as Iron Man, Chris Evans as Captain America, Chris Hemsworth as Thor, Mark Ruffalo at The Hulk, Scarlett Johansson as Black Widor and Jeremy Renner as Hawkeye; and if it wasn't already steeped in fandom it's directed by Joss Whedon (Serenity). I hope it's good, although I feel like I haven't done the reading as I've only seen half of the lead up films. I'm sure I'll muddle through :)

In wide release this week we have to sole release of The Avengers, starring a whack-ton of superhero characters and stellar cast of Robert Downey Jr. as Iron Man, Chris Evans as Captain America, Chris Hemsworth as Thor, Mark Ruffalo at The Hulk, Scarlett Johansson as Black Widor and Jeremy Renner as Hawkeye; and if it wasn't already steeped in fandom it's directed by Joss Whedon (Serenity). I hope it's good, although I feel like I haven't done the reading as I've only seen half of the lead up films. I'm sure I'll muddle through :)

Film Fan Fridays for Friday April 27, 2012
Hello Film Fans and Fanatics!
Welcome to Film Fan Fridays for Friday April 27, 2012!

In limited release this week we have 4 films to choose from, with a few telling personal stories and historical focus including the impressive and epic film Warriors of the Rainbow: Seediq Bale / Sàidékè balái set in Taiwan and following clans of aboriginal warriors during a Japanese invasion and occupation. We also have The Lady, a biopic starring Michelle Yeoh as Burmese politician Aung San Suu Kyi; the film follow Aung San Suu Kyi and her Michael Aris (played by David Thewlis) and is directed by Luc Besson. Also out in limited release is the Darling Companion a drama following the relationship between a woman and her dog and her husband; plus the Canadian documentary Material Success with opens at the Projection Booth.
In wide release this week we have the theme of real continue with The Raven, which stars John Cusack as Edgar Allen Poe in a gothic mystery following the puzzle of similarly themes crimes that appear very close to the ones in his books. We also have he action film Safe starring Jason Statham as a man who has to protect a young girl from baddies (this one is *so* a Shannon film). If claymation and pirates are your thing, you are finally in luck as The Pirates! Band of Misfits opens this weekend, and I have to admit it looks like a lot of fun. Rounding out the wide releases we have the comedy The Five-Year Engagement starring Jason Segal and Emily Blunt, directed by Nicholas Stoller (Forgetting Sarah Marshall). Edit: the Bollywood film Tezz also was released on April 27, 2012.
This week we also have Hot Docs, Canadian International Documentary Film Festival, hitting theatres all over the city, bringing us documentary film from around the world and lots of Canadian docs to boot. Film Fan Fridays for Friday April 20, 2012
Hello Film Fans and Fanatics!

Welcome to Film Fan Fridays for Friday April 20, 2012!
In limited release this week / we have an impressive amount of documentaries including geek-centric Comic-Con: Episode IV - A Fan's Hope which proves that colons can be used in non-sequels and three-quels, plus the Hot Docs Bloor Cinema has a hold-out last record store documentary with Sound it Out as well as the Belcher Islands-set documentary People of a Feather following the connection between the people that live there, the elder duck and hydro dams. Keeping it Canadian we have the charming looking road movie I'm Yours which I definitely want to check out, as well as the historically set My Way that follows a Japanese and a South Korean man before and during WWII. We also have Damsels in Distress which I can't quite get a handle on - the trailer has a bizarre tone which makes sense once you know it's the same director as The Last Days of Disco and I love that there is tap dancing, but there is something so...odd. Curious odd though, and that's hopefully a good thing.
In wide release this week we have more documentaries including the nature doc Chimpanzee following the very cute baby chimp Oscar, as well as Canadian do West Wind: The Vision of Tom Thomson centred on the celebrated Canadian artist. Also out in wide release we have The Lucky One starring Zac Efron & Taylor Schilling based on the Nicholas Sparks novel, comedy Think Like a Man and Bollywood comedy Vicky Donor about a sperm donor. I kid you not!

Film Fan Fridays for Friday April 13, 2012

Welcome to Film Fan Fridays for Friday April 13, 2012!
We have a jam packed week of film from around the world and from right here in Canada two, with lots of hype for many of the films. An exciting week of releases unfolds...
In limited release this week we have films from 2 iconic Canadian directors, both of whom I love, with Bruce McDonalds Hard Core Logo 2 and Guy Maddins Keyhole. Also exciting to see in release is The Hunter starring Willem Dafoe based on the novel by Julia Leigh; this one was a hopeful for the Book to Film Club but it was too hard to determine the release date even though now we have it! I definitely recommend reading the book, described as a 'Tasmanian gothic'. Also out this week in limited release is Hong Kong film A Simple Life and drama/romance The Deep Blue Sea starring Rachel Weisz and Tom Hiddleston (Thor). And on the documentary front Hot Docs Bloor Cinema has in release the haunting looking Girl Model as well as Happy People: A Year in the Taiga (co-directed by Werner Herzog!).
In wide release this week we have the fun horror jaunt of The Cabin in the Woods (it's clever and easily a must-see for horror fans) and the bombastic scifi/action/prison break/comedy Lockout (it's pretty entertaining although you really have to just 'go' with it). I've got my eye on StreetDance 2 which is a follow up to the 2010 dance film StreetDance and uses the classic dance-movie premise of mixing up the styles, and it looks like they mix up the cast too as it's mostly a new crew with the exception of George Sampson as Eddie and Stephanie Nguyen as Steph. Yes, I know the original StreetDance *that* well that I can tell. Also out in wide release is The Three Stooges for the slapstick comedy fans, and I'm a little suprized I only started hearing about this week - but I'm more in the StreetDance/The Cabin the in Woods/Lockout circle(s) over comedy ones.

Welcome to Film Fan Fridays for Friday April 13, 2012!
We have a jam packed week of film from around the world and from right here in Canada two, with lots of hype for many of the films. An exciting week of releases unfolds...
In limited release this week we have films from 2 iconic Canadian directors, both of whom I love, with Bruce McDonalds Hard Core Logo 2 and Guy Maddins Keyhole. Also exciting to see in release is The Hunter starring Willem Dafoe based on the novel by Julia Leigh; this one was a hopeful for the Book to Film Club but it was too hard to determine the release date even though now we have it! I definitely recommend reading the book, described as a 'Tasmanian gothic'. Also out this week in limited release is Hong Kong film A Simple Life and drama/romance The Deep Blue Sea starring Rachel Weisz and Tom Hiddleston (Thor). And on the documentary front Hot Docs Bloor Cinema has in release the haunting looking Girl Model as well as Happy People: A Year in the Taiga (co-directed by Werner Herzog!).
In wide release this week we have the fun horror jaunt of The Cabin in the Woods (it's clever and easily a must-see for horror fans) and the bombastic scifi/action/prison break/comedy Lockout (it's pretty entertaining although you really have to just 'go' with it). I've got my eye on StreetDance 2 which is a follow up to the 2010 dance film StreetDance and uses the classic dance-movie premise of mixing up the styles, and it looks like they mix up the cast too as it's mostly a new crew with the exception of George Sampson as Eddie and Stephanie Nguyen as Steph. Yes, I know the original StreetDance *that* well that I can tell. Also out in wide release is The Three Stooges for the slapstick comedy fans, and I'm a little suprized I only started hearing about this week - but I'm more in the StreetDance/The Cabin the in Woods/Lockout circle(s) over comedy ones.
