The Future (2011)

Reason to see: I saw the trailer for The Future before seeing Another Earth and was instantly won over



I loved The Future.



The Future follows the couple of Sophie (Miranda July - also writer/director) and Jason (Hamish Linklater) who has an oops-ah-ha moment of feeling like their lives will be over soon, and therefore start to live as if that was the case. Infused with this idea but still with a post-slacker/why-bother lethargy, lives a beautiful humanness in the film, one that is very present and connects in the moment.



Sophie & Jason are obviously very comfortable with each other, but don't often reach out beyond their bubble, which allows for subtle comedy though social awkwardness. The film is quietly dark and quirky in a very relaxed way, or rather apathetic lethargy of from an cynical, intellectual point of view. Like if you thought through every possibility and didn't see a way something could work so why bother do anything, kind of way. It's actually amazing that anything happens in the film, given that feel but it does. A surprizing amount does.



You have to go with the flow of the film, and just believe what it tells and feel it out rather than think it out. Ironically, the film certainly will make you think but don't get bogged down in the logistics of the concepts but rather resonance of the moment. Like having a dream that may defy logic, you go with it on the journey and see where it takes you.



It's a film that talks very directly with it's audience, but I don't think everyone will hear or like what it has to say. But I heard it. And I loved it. I loved The Future.
